chumbawamba - a fairy tale
Chapt. Two - Guess who? Manfred The Great
The great king bashed down his goblet on the oaken table as kings do when they want more wine. Everyone was silent. ?Minstrel the noise of chattering women grates on my ears. Play me some music,? he bellowed.
A fairy tale handed down
I believed it, didn?t we all
A man, a hero, walks on to the scene
Unquestionably good at everything
First he does battle with various creatures
Which compared to his goodness are evil monsters
Having made dragons extinct forever
He murders a couple of the castle guards
He enters the castle quite unnoticed
And tells the girl he?ll be back for her
?And so I shall make her mine forever?
But runs into trouble and is taken prisoner
Is taken to the big bad, bad, bad, baddy
Baddy tells hero how goodness is finished
And has him strapped up to a slow-death device
But he escapes as the rope starts to burn through
The blade crashes down on the block where his head was
With a sword from the wall he finishes the castle guards
A lamp gets knocked over in the panic and a fire starts
A race against time to rescue the princess
To get past the baddy to get out of the castle
Out of the window where the horses are waiting
The couple ride off and the whole place goes up in flames
chumbawamba - a lament to the best
Oh, where are you now George?
Now that wingers have been laid to rest
And shirts have adverts across their breast
And it?s all about who?s the richest
Where are you now George?
With those boots that laced up the side
And that Irish shirt that you wore with pride
And that picture of you with Mike Summerbee and bride
Oh, where are you now George?
I dreamed of you dribbling past City?s back four
And leaving Joe Corrigan fumbling on the floor
And the Stretford End singing ?More! Bestie! More!?
Where are you now George?
In a boutique down Carnaby Street?
Or gambling on the horses at an Aintree meet?
Oh where oh where are those magic feet?
I know where you?ve been
On Granada every week
I want you to come back to me
And have you seen George Oghani
And Charlie George?
chumbawamba - a man walks into a bar
A Man walks into a bar
He Says, "Give me a Bacardi and Coke."
The back of beyond repair
Welcomes the broken and the broke
The latter hitches a ride
On the back of second-hand smoke
And the man,
Well he'd be the punch line
In someone elses Joke
I'll beat this drink
It's a habit I'll kick
Please help me now
I'm gonna be sick
Something hit me
I wound up on the floor
Damn this Bacardi
I don't want anymore
A Man walks into a think-tank
Full of Hooch and future sales
Mixing wish lists with extension plans
Reap Guantanamo Jail
Smell the solid beach
And a whiff of cannot fail
And a guilt trait shop with goblets
Dripping cutthroat cocktails
And they drink a toast to Florida
And all its air-conditioned homes
And they damn the health of Cuba
And they damn its fortified Rum
He sips a calamatar olive
Spits out the stone
And He mimics crushing people
Between forefinger and thumb
I'll beat this drink
It's a habit I'll kick
Please help me now
I'm gonna be sick
Something hit me
I wound up on the floor
Damn This Bacardi
I don't want anymore
The first man wakes up in the same bar
But it's different as in a dream
Infact it's someone else's dream
Clean sheets & New Regime
Fetal burns as Nero romes
Give the bar a zip code
Cya
Cya
See You
And it's one more for the road
I'll beat this drink
It's a habit I'll kick
Please help me now
I'm gonna be sick
Something hit me
I wound up on the floor
Damn this Bacardi
I don't want anymore(x4)
chumbawamba - a regular guy
Boys own hero born again
Savior of the Empire
Come to save our national game
Against all odds, and umpire
Once a simple cricketer
now champion of bravado
He's the darling of the tabloids
'Cause he's got a trendy hairdo
The game was having trouble
Filling advertising space
So our hero padded up
Media face, medium pace
chumbawamba - act with mother
M spells man, K spells kind, could somebody tell me is man kind?
Manking is saying, gotta say goodbye now, gotto say goodbye to mother earth
I mean, how could I ever say that to her?
She?s my mother, and I love her, there?s no other, mother earth, mother earth
I used to watch, watch with mother, I grew up with her
Now I?m grown up, I stand on my own two feet, but that?s no reason to forget her
By acting with mother not against her
First second and third worlds can help each other
By sharing the load, we can bear the burden
By working together we can replant the garden
Mother nature can be a right bastard at times, but I reckon she?s a whole lot cleverer than mankind. He might have more experience, especially in apathy. Well ask him or ask yourself, ?War, poverty, death, rape, and violence on our streets?? And he?ll look at you blankly and say, ?Mindless?. Man made catastrophe and it?s happening now, today, so we?re right up shit creek without a paddle, without a boat even. Question, what are full of holes yet hold much water? Answer, people. People need each other, not money, not packaged shit, we need each other.
How to be nice to each other?
How to talk to each other?
How to live together again?
I reckon, peace means learning to live together again
chumbawamba - add me
Iâ??m a loner alone with neuroses and hate
Anger is a permanent character trait
My letter bombs are primed and ready to send
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Iâ??m a wound-up whiner with a fetish for guns
Iâ??m almost 50 and I live with my Mum
I hope my nude picture doesnâ??t offend
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Add me. Add me
My mother says she wished sheâ??d never had me
Add me. Add me
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Iâ??m a recovering alcoholic I rarely leave my room
Peeping through the curtains in my dog costume
The voices in my head aah theyâ??ll get me in the end
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Iâ??d really like to mail you the picture that I drew
Itâ??s Kylieâ??s body but the head is you
Iâ??ve asked you sixty times before Iâ??m asking you again â??
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Add me. Add me
My mother says she wished sheâ??d never had me
Add me. Add me
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Hereâ??s a picture of me in my Nazi uniform
doing a trick with an egg that I like to perform
at a monster truck rally that my Mum and me attend
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Iâ??ve added Britney and Paris and you and Tom
Iâ??m going to find your address so I can visit you at home
I donâ??t like people but I think I could pretend â??
Would you like to add me as a friend?
Add me. Add me
My mother says she wished sheâ??d never had me
Add me. Add me
Would you like to add me as a friend?
chumbawamba - adversity
Thirty years of the same old shit
Of music, money, hit after hit
Smiles, lies, sales, walls
That?s thirty years of rock and roll
They changed it?s name once or twice
Get rebellious with a company deal
Business thrives where honesty fails
Contracts? Con tricks!
Sing revolution, wait ?til it starts
One eye on the bank account, one on the charts
Government-sponsored rebellion--buy it!
A bit more product to keep us quiet!
Shhh
Product sells, people die
Same revolution, wrapped in lies
In these sexist, drugged-up, rock and roles
The biggest prizes to the biggest fools
Ask the puppet-masters who pull the strings
?Who makes the money when the puppets sing??
Ask the corporations
?Where does the money go??
Ask the empty-bellied children
?Tell me what are we singing for??
Until we pull down the walls
It?ll stay the same
Until we find something new
Make it change
I know there most be more
So what are we singing for?
These puppets, underneath the skin, have the same problems as you and me--they want to be loved, don?t know where to begin. Just a wall?s width away, but impossible to get close. Offstage, with nothing to hide behind, the puppets are running away. And meanwhile, we?re running away from ourselves... and meanwhile, we?re running away from ourselves... and meanwhile, we?re running away from ourselves...
If our music makes you happy or content
It has failed
If our music entertains, but doesn?t inspire
It has failed
The music?s not a threat
Action the music inspires can be a threat!
I know there must be more...
chumbawamba - tubthumping
We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times
"Oh Danny Boy
Danny Boy
Danny Boy..."
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times
"Don't cry for me
Next door neighbour..."
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing
chumbawamba - p e
The new games tutor was like any other teacher
Same blatant ideology they're trying to install in you
At every opportunity they'd press us to compete
Taught to butt and how to kick and how to stamp on feet
How to punch, how to gouge when you're down in the scrum
"You've got to be ruthless if you want to be a winner, son"
If people get hurt as you battle to the top
Well, it's natural selection, it really can't be helped
So never be afraid of some healthy competition
It'll never let you down
It's what capitalism is based upon
So never be afraid of some healthy competition
It'll never let you down
It's what capitalism is based upon So never be afraid
It'll never let you down
chumbawamba - after shelley
?Anybody can press a button and blow up a ship. Anybody can use an atom bomb.
Anybody can pick up a big whip, and whip you. Anybody can stick a knife into
you. Anybody can pull a trigger. But where?s the man with the character, as can
take a punch on the nose and keep his temper, keep control of himself??
The seed you sow, another reaps
The wealth you find, another keeps
The clothes you weave, another wears
The arms you forge, another bears
The songs you write, another sings
The heart you lose, another wins
The food you bake, another eats
Poison-laced and oh, so sweet
Rock and Roll
Check your pulse
Art or death
True or false
Can?t stay young
Can?t grow old
Overpriced
Undersold
chumbawamba - ah men
A visionary pause in the cycle
When she refused to buy or sell
When the daughters of perfect wives
Said there must be more sacrifice
Needed more than symbolic change
More than silent wasting away
In factories and sterile marriages
He was God, she was powerless
With a brick for every year of life
She set out for the house of lies
The old boys? club under siege
His lordship cowered under his seat
Called for brandy and reinforcements
Blasted away at every movement
Close to breaking down the door
Past thick blue line and stupid laws
Black Friday left her bruised and stubborn
One brick from winning the struggle
Rapunzel hacked at the ivory tower
Asquith quickly rose to the hour
Appealed to patriotism, oily smiles
Gave nothing, called it compromise
Gauging the situation perfectly
Said ladies, ladies, listen to me
Nineteen fourteen, we?re on the brink of war
Pick up a flag, drop your cause
Your targets are counter-revolutionary
Take my hand in democracy
Here?s a piece of paper
You?re officially free
Here?s a list of instructions
For you to obey
And here?s sharp knife
To cut your own throat
Small sacrifice in return for a vote
Whispered word in Pankhurst?s ear
Visions of the first woman peer
Led women down the garden path
And into the arms of the enemy
Jail and force-feeding, waster martyrdom
Sold her songs for the national anthem
Slotted the smile back neatly into place
Served refreshments
At the end of the race
All demands reduced to a joke
X marks the plague, abandon hope
Butlers still pouring brandy for the rich
Excuse me pass me the privilege
A woman?s voice, the state?s idea
Same vested interests, same dirty deals
Currie and Williams immersed in the times
Examples to keep the rest in line
Currie and Williams two of a kind
Examples to keep the rest in line
Absolute power
Absolute power
Ladies, ladies, listen to me
chumbawamba - all in vain
?I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish (Repeats)
But it?s all in vain? (Repeats)
Different colors, different faces
Different schools in different places
Scour the morning papers, all in vain
Evening after, who remembers?
Say your prayers for the great pretenders
I see nothing but flowers, all in vain
?I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish (Repeats)
But it?s all in vain? (Repeats)
All the gravestone elegies
I-never-met-you memories
And every T.V. picture, all in vain
All your questions, deep as skin
Seperate worlds to put them in
Another might-have-been, all in vain
?I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish? (Repeats)
Color blind as tse-tse flies
Sucking all our difference dry
And as we sleep they multiply (Repeats)
?All in vain? (Repeats)
Multiply (Repeats)
chumbawamba - all mixed up
Sitting on the shelf when someone called my number
With a template in one hand, scissors in the other
'What lump of clay is this?' Said the king maker to me
Dull, gray matter, perfect for his alchemy
The future flesh and blood on the bones of the big lie
A no-wit who's face fits and never wonders why
I met my Mephistophelles, the papers sealed in blood
Like I got a transfer deal the lad done good
(Chorus)
Good King Danbert at the helm
His face on every coin of the realm
And every time we sing, it's three cheers for the king
Hey, hey, hey
Sirhan, Sirhan, where have you gone?
All mixed up
We take a fool for a king
All mixed up
Mistake a fool for a king
(Repeat)
The washing powder advert
That everybody hates
But all the research shows that's how brand names are made
Squeaky clean, no skeletons
In other words I've never lived
Makes me highly-qualified
To decide what gives
Rough-shod, riding rail-road
Over all the awkward questions
Queen Victoria of Grantham
To give me her blessing
It's written all over me
I'm touched by the hand
I am the something very rotten
In the state of little England
(Repeat chorus)
All mixed up
(Repeat)
chumbawamba - all the king s men
And so in the tradition of Manfred the Great
The people built the glorious vision in his name
Great Britain they called it, a land for heroes
A land where no one was starving, a paradise, a garden of Eden
The garden of Eden, levelled to the ground
And concreted over, re-built from scratch
With I.C.I. man-made fibres, they made their paradise out of plastic
But our world is cracked and it?s showing through
The plastic backed cello-taped superglue
The paper money and the patched up lies
The cover-up jobs, the fact they try to hide
That all the king?s horses and all the king?s men
Will never stick our world together again
With their plastic, sticky-backed, red-taped lies,
And all the paper money they exchange for our lives
Think about it, our world, all the ecological catastrophes
They?re happening all at once, at the same time now
Mankind to the rescue, I ask you why?
To him tomorrow is just another fucking day fucking up the earth
Filling his fat silver-lined pockets full
So please listen, dear peoplekind
See the reason that minkind won?t save the earth
Cos there?s no money in it for him, it?s not worth his while
It?s up to us
It?s up to us
It?s up to us, each and every one of us
chumbawamba - all s well at oakwell
From Upton Park to the Baseball Ground
From Old Trafford to Anfield Road
It's the same old story if you're disabled
Just token gestures, no real facilities
All those clubs so famous and rich
Stick the disabled by the side of the pitch
Exposed to snow and wind and rain
With a limited view of the game
But down at Oakwell things are different
You don't have to stay at home if you're disabled
There's a special stand, with a decent view
What big clubs don't consider--Barnsley do!
